Mark and Trish Lyons (owners of the Asheville Brews Cruise at that time) partnered with their design pals at ThreeSheets:Design, and decided to start a “Winter Warmer” beer festival for the Asheville community to “shake up the winter blahs.” The first annual Winter Warmer beer festival was held in January 2008 at The Garage. Marc Higgins & Dehlia Low turned out for the musical side of the things, and Luella’s Barbeque provided the tasty grub. 2008’s event sold out 3 days prior to the event, and all 275+ who attended deemed the festival a huge success!
In 2009, the Winter Warmer shifted gears to a larger space to allow for more breweries, more beer goers, and more success! The Haywood Park Hotel was brought on board, as well as musical performances from Brushfire Stankgrass and Woody Wood. Again, tickets sold out days in advance, and 2009 had almost 700 beer enthusiasts - fun was had by all.
2010 offered the same musical artists, and had 20 breweries participating. Food was provided by the Lobster Trap, and tickets this year sold out almost a week in advance, with over 900 guests enjoying the festival.
The 2011 event was surely a crowd pleaser, as well. Moving to the Civic Center’s Exhibition Hall offered more elbow room, and an opportunity for a few more breweries to attend. Brushfire Stankgrass came back by popular demand, along with the debut of The Leigh Glass band, with the “grub” provided by Fiore’s. Again, tickets sold out days in advance, and the largest crowd ever, 1100+ enthusiasts enjoyed another Winter Warmer.
2012's "5th Anniversary" was the best yet - with over 25 breweries attending, Deschutes Brewery (from Oregon) was our special guest, and the festival sold out almost 2 weeks in advance again, with over 1200+ attendees.
We are "movin' on up" for 2013's event - the festival will be held on the main arena level of the Civic Center, allowing for a handful more breweries, more elbow room, but the same unique intimate feel, providing quality food, music, and tastings that our "repeat offenders" have come to expect! Guest breweries were: Founders, from Grand Rapids, MI - and Cigar City, from Tampa, FL.
2014's event was held on the main arena level of the Civic Center, allowing for a handful more breweries, more elbow room, but the same unique intimate feel, providing quality food, music, and tastings that our "repeat offenders" have come to expect! Guest breweries were Surly and Big Storm.
2015's event was held on the main arena level of the Civic Center again, allowing room for 46 breweries and 15 vendors, but the same unique intimate feel - providing quality food, music, and tastings that our "repeat offenders" have come to expect! Our guest brewery was Great Lakes Brewing Co. from Cleveland, OH, with Alarm Clock Conspiracy & Black Robin Hero as our musical guests.
...we hope to see you at 2016's festival - sure to be the best one yet!
Tickets are $50pp and will include a souvenir mug, samples during the event, caterering by Chestnut/Corner Kitchen, and live musical entertainment by 2 bands.
